Kodak Charmera: between nostalgia, FOMO and the beauty of "ugly" things

A few months ago, while browsing online, I came across a review of a Kodak micro-camera. The
design immediately recalled a famous disposable from the 80s: the Kodak Charmera. A machine that
looks like a toy - and in reality it really is - so small that it fits into a third of a pack of
cigarettes.
Intrigued by the price, I checked the main online stores and immediately noticed something
strange: it had become unobtainable. The only pieces available had crazy prices, tripled
compared to the launch of around 30 dollars. Each new lot sold out within seconds. I said to
myself: "I'll take it when the FOMO (fear of being left out) has passed." And guess what? Two
weeks ago, while shopping in a shopping centre, I found it displayed in a well-known electronics
chain at the introductory price (€30/40), available in large quantities. The novelty effect had
worn off and the nostalgics were satisfied.
I ordered it online and, after a few days, it arrived. The packaging is a "blind box": you don't
know which of the 7 models you got (but since I liked them all, it wasn't a problem). Here is

The packaging is very refined: it winks at the 80s with a brochure full of
stylistic references of the time. I won't write you a complete technical review because you can
find plenty of them online, complete with photographic samples. The quality of the photos and
videos (yes, it records those too) is that of a toy: don't expect miracles, a low-end phone
produces decidedly superior images. But the point is not the technical quality.
The true value of this commercial gimmick is the ability to tickle our nostalgic feelings,
offering a pocket-sized tool to immortalize the moments of life in a different way: more fun and
carefree. Today the photos we take with our smartphone remain locked in a gallery or end up in a
cloud, becoming a digital sediment that risks devaluing every event. With this machine we won't
create masterpieces, but we will have fun capturing the moment, leaving out the cold and
high-performance technology of our modern devices. In a world that runs at breakneck speeds, we
need a little simplicity. We also need "ugly" things, things that are not perfect.
And as always, I was right: you have to wait for the FOMO wave to pass to buy something. It is
not true that the opportunities are over; sometimes you just need to be patient. This story
reminds me a lot of the boom in LIDL sneakers during Covid: they sold like hot cakes, were
resold at absurd prices, only to then deflate and find themselves in spades on supermarket
shelves. How complex (and sometimes naive) consumers we are! Will we never learn? Below I leave

Qualche mese fa, navigando online, mi è capitata sotto gli occhi la recensione di una
micro-fotocamera Kodak. Il design richiamava immediatamente una famosa usa e getta degli anni
'80: la Kodak Charmera. Una macchinetta che sembra un giocattolo — e in realtà lo è davvero —
così piccola da stare in un terzo di pacchetto di sigarette.
Incuriosito dal prezzo, ho controllato i principali store online e ho subito notato una cosa
strana: era diventata introvabile. Gli unici pezzi disponibili avevano prezzi folli, triplicati
rispetto al lancio di circa 30 dollari. Ogni nuovo lotto andava sold out in pochi secondi. Mi
sono detto: "Me la prenderò quando la FOMO (la paura di restare esclusi) sarà passata".E
indovinato? Due settimane fa, facendo acquisti in un centro commerciale, l’ho trovata esposta in
una nota catena di elettronica al prezzo di lancio (30/40 €), disponibile in grandi quantità.
L'effetto novità era svanito e i nostalgici erano stati soddisfatti.
L'ho ordinata online e, dopo qualche giorno, è arrivata. La confezione è una "blind box": non sai
quale dei 7 modelli ti può capitare(ma poiché mi piacevano tutti, non era un problema). Ecco la mia!

Il packaging è curatissimo: strizza l'occhio agli anni '80 con un depliant ricco di
riferimenti stilistici dell'epoca.Non vi scriverò una recensione tecnica completa perché online
ne trovate a bizzeffe, complete di sample fotografici. La qualità delle foto e dei video (sì,
registra anche quelli) è quella di un giocattolo: non aspettatevi miracoli, un telefono di
fascia bassa produce immagini decisamente superiori. Ma il punto non è la qualità tecnica.
Il vero valore di questa trovata commerciale è la capacità di solleticare i nostri sentimenti
nostalgici, offrendo uno strumento tascabile per immortalare i momenti della vita in una chiave
diversa: più divertente e spensierata.Oggi le foto che scattiamo con lo smartphone restano
chiuse in una galleria o finiscono in un cloud, diventando un sedimento digitale che rischia di
svalorizzare ogni evento. Con questa macchinetta non realizzeremo capolavori, ma ci divertiremo
a catturare l'istante, lasciando fuori la fredda e performante tecnologia dei nostri dispositivi
moderni. In un mondo che corre a velocità folli, abbiamo bisogno di un po' di semplicità.
Abbiamo bisogno anche di cose "bruttine", di cose non perfette.
E come sempre, ho avuto ragione: bisogna aspettare che passi l’onda della FOMO per acquistare
qualcosa. Non è vero che le occasioni sono finite; a volte basta solo pazientare. Questa storia
mi ricorda molto il boom delle sneakers del LIDL durante il Covid: andavano a ruba, venivano
rivendute a prezzi assurdi, per poi sgonfiarsi e ritrovarsi a palate sugli scaffali dei
supermercati. Quanto siamo complessi (e a volte ingenui) consumatori! Non impareremo mai?Qui
