In the days of preparation for Christmas I was discussing with some friends a topic that always comes up during this period. Sometimes it is really difficult to find a gift for someone dear, even when we know their tastes and needs well. One way we had several years ago, however, was to give music as a gift. It didn't matter whether it was on CD or cassette. If you gave a CD as a gift you were almost on the safe side: no matter what, the person would listen to that music at least once. And then the albums were beautiful, with all the inserts inside and the lyrics of the songs. If we were penniless, we would give ourselves a single, which cost significantly less.
Today, for better or for worse, things have completely changed. For the better, we have an almost unlimited amount of music at our fingertips, at very little or no cost. If we don't want to subscribe to Spotify, there is YouTube, or there are other platforms and other more or less legal methods. We can literally access millions of songs without any effort. Recently some Anna's Archive activists carried out a huge scraping from Spotify, taking down around 86 million songs, including metadata, for a total of around 300 terabytes of data.
Does all this music really belong to us? We know very well not: we will never have the material time to listen to it all. Even if we listened to music 24 hours a day until the end of our days, we wouldn't be able to finish the catalog. So what's the point of having all this if we ultimately listen to 0.1% of all the music produced? We will address these and other questions later. Il tempo in cui a Natale si regalava la musica...

Nei giorni di preparazione al Natale discutevo con alcuni amici di un tema che torna sempre in questo periodo. A volte si fa davvero fatica a trovare un regalo per qualcuno di caro, anche quando conosciamo bene i suoi gusti e le sue esigenze. Un modo che avevamo parecchi anni fa, invece, era quello di regalare della musica. Che fosse su CD o su musicassetta era indifferente. Se regalavi un CD andavi quasi sul sicuro: male che andava, la persona almeno una volta quella musica l’ascoltava. E poi gli album erano belli, con tutti gli inserti all’interno e i testi delle canzoni. Se eravamo squattrinati, si regalava un singolo, che costava decisamente meno.
Oggi, nel bene e nel male, le cose sono completamente cambiate. Nel bene, abbiamo una quantità di musica quasi illimitata a portata di mano, a costo bassissimo o nullo. Se non vogliamo fare un abbonamento a Spotify, c’è YouTube, oppure ci sono altre piattaforme e altri metodi più o meno legali. Possiamo letteralmente accedere a milioni di brani senza alcuna fatica. Recentemente alcuni attivisti di Anna’s Archive hanno realizzato un enorme scraping da Spotify, tirando giù circa 86 milioni di brani, compresi i metadata, per un totale di circa 300 terabyte di dati.
Tutta questa musica ci appartiene davvero? Sappiamo benissimo di no: non avremo mai il tempo materiale per ascoltarla tutta. Anche se ascoltassimo musica 24 ore su 24 fino alla fine dei nostri giorni, non riusciremmo a finire il catalogo. Allora a cosa serve avere tutto ciò, se in fin dei conti ascoltiamo lo 0,1% di tutta la musica prodotta? Queste ed altre domande le affronteremo poi.
