The Europa 97 diskette to educate the masses about the euro

In just over a month and a half it will be 25 years since the euro came into force in Italy and
in several European states. Many of you will not even remember what the world was like before
this disaster. They say the euro has brought stability and has been a brake on the lira's
growing inflation. Personally, I believe it is right. The euro proved to be a weapon in the
hands of the ECB to blackmail member states who, in the meantime, had lost their monetary
sovereignty.
There was inflation, of course. The older ones will remember that the prices of products have
practically doubled compared to the lira, while salaries have struggled to follow the same
trend.
I remember that it was 1997 and, at the fair in my country which is held every year, there was an
exhibition space entitled Europa 97. At this stand there was information material on the
euro, brochures and paper documentation. There was also a nice floppy disk wrapped in
transparent film: a free gift distributed to everyone. Inside there was a software that started
in autorun once inserted into the PC reader, and through an interactive path we were instructed
on the wonderful future that would await us with the new currency. I talked about this topic

Needless to tell you, I raided those damned floppies. It was too greedy material to leave there.
I took them and formatted them to be able to reuse them for the most disparate purposes. I said
that I had to distribute them to many friends and therefore I needed several. Those were truly
carefree times. I don't know if they will ever return...

Tra poco più di un mese e mezzo saranno 25 anni dall’entrata in vigore dell’euro in Italia e
in diversi stati europei. Molti di voi non si ricorderanno neanche com’era il mondo prima di
questa sciagura. Dicono che l’euro abbia portato stabilità e che sia stato un freno alla
crescente inflazione della lira. Personalmente, ci credo il giusto. L’euro si è dimostrato
un’arma in mano alla BCE per ricattare gli stati membri che, nel frattempo, avevano perso la
propria sovranità monetaria.
L’inflazione c’è stata, eccome. I più anziani ricorderanno che i prezzi dei prodotti sono
praticamente raddoppiati rispetto alla lira, mentre gli stipendi hanno faticato a seguire lo
stesso andamento.
Ricordo che era il 1997 e, alla fiera del mio paese che si tiene ogni anno, c’era uno spazio
espositivo intitolato Europa 97. In questo stand c’era materiale informativo
sull’euro, opuscoli e documentazione cartacea. C’era anche un simpatico disco floppy avvolto
in una pellicola trasparente: un omaggio distribuito a tutti. All’interno c’era un software
che partiva in autorun una volta inserito nel lettore del PC, e attraverso un percorso
interattivo si veniva istruiti sul meraviglioso futuro che ci avrebbe atteso con la nuova
moneta. Ho parlato di questo argomento tempo fa sul subreddit Lost

Inutile dirvi che feci razzia di quei maledetti floppy. Era materiale troppo goloso per
lasciarlo lì. Li presi e li formattai per poterli riutilizzare per gli scopi più disparati.
Dissi che dovevo distribuirli a tanti amici e che quindi me ne servivano diversi. Erano
tempi davvero spensierati. Non so se mai ritorneranno…
